Candice Swanepoel started out life in a pristine, rural South African village called Mooi River, where she was raised on a farm and privy to what she described as a life of ‘love, nature and family’. A natural beauty, Swanepoel developed a keen interest in fashion and was given her first chance to reach for the catwalk when she was spotted by a scout in a local flea market. She was 15 at the time. What followed was a heady rush of bookings and modeling jobs that took her to the all the fashion capitals of Europe. In just two years she gained a much deeper understanding of the fashion world and found time enough to savour her dream as she jetted between Paris, Milan, London and South Africa.
Then the moment came when everything changed. She was faced suddenly with a precipice and a leap of faith. On the other side were the sometimes carcinogenic lights of New York City. To reach them, and to grasp the promise of modeling full-time, she would have to give up a teenage life surrounded by close family and friends. If she didn’t take that leap her dream would likely fall and fade before her eyes. But it would take a lot of ambition and courage to jump. Thankfully, for the fashion world and for Swanepoel, she jumped…
This year Swanepoel joined another African Victoria Secrets Angel and close friend, Behati Prinsloo, in welcoming their first babies into this big, blue, wonderful world. They almost timed their pregnancies to perfection and even shared due dates in September. They also shared a laidback and loving approach to their growing bumps, promoting the gradual beauty of pregnancy through their professional social media channels. We saw the Angels wrapped in the arms of their significant others. We saw them reclining and reveling in the of their child, displaying all their signature poise, whilst holidaying in flowing shirts, dresses draped in layered knits or simply flaunting their new figures in nothing but loose-fitting maternity jeans. What it taught us what that, aside from all the mood swings and excavated tubs of ice cream, pregnancy is also very beautiful, life-affirming and, I daresay, sometimes even luxurious.
Having enjoyed a relatively pain-free pregnancy, Swanepoel finally got her chance to cradle her first child, baby boy Anacã, propped against little white blankets and pillows. She and fiancé Hermann Nicoli announced the arrival on Instagram, letting us know that they were overjoyed with a photo of their smiling newborn, accompanied by a caption, a part of which read, simply:
‘Life is sweet.’
In the photo above you can see baby Anacã . They took the name from a Brazilian word used to distinguish a wonderfully colourful type of parrot – hence the safari-themed baby shower Swanepoel held in August, when she first revealed the name to her guests. Right on cue, at the end of September, there was another little arrival – this time it was baby Dusty Rose, the first child of Behati Prinsloo and husband Adam Levine. It’s safe to say it was all smiles in the Levine and Swanepoel households.
