YOU never know who’s going to step up at a fashion event and steal the spotlight. Sometimes you can guess what starlets might be wearing, especially if they’re the face of a particular brand or friends with a well-known designer. A few of the leading houses, like Prada or Gucci, will choose an individual nominee, or perhaps a presenter, for maximum impact. But, apart from those subtle conventions, there isn’t much you can do in the way of preparing for that stunning moment when one of these famous luminaries brings us the latest creation from our favourite designers. We watch with bated breath. Then the tinted windows roll back and the limousine door swings open. Suddenly, in that moment, we are privy to the latest in trendsetting glamour or fashion faux pas.
This was one of (if not the) best marriages of dress and actress we’ve seen so far this year. The recent stand-out actress Elizabeth Olsen, the emotional core of Godzilla and also the latest addition to the Avengers unit, couldn’t have looked sexier with what appears to be so little effort. This is a front-page-grabbing, whiplash-inducing look if ever there was one and it sure did turn a few heads at the Captain America: Civil War premiere (including Chris Evans’) in London’s Shepherds Bush. For the first time Elizabeth has reprised her role as the Scarlet Witch, conveying a sweet and intelligent approach to both indie films and franchises alike.
“I’m on this trajectory right now where I’m thinking,” said Elizabeth, speaking to Vogue on the morning of the premiere, “’Lizzie you can be sexier.’ I have always wanted to be conservative.”
It looks like that trajectory is taking her out into the stratosphere. Needless to say this curve-skimming, floor-length gown has got our vote. We just love that risqué twist, with gaping keyhole detailing and a plunging cut-out running all the way down from neck to navel. It helps that Elizabeth has such a powerfully curvaceous figure, whilst retaining a demure touch with that floor-sweeping skirt to complete a perfect silhouette.
You can always count on Beyonce to up the ante at a fashion event. Fresh from adding the final touches to her Jay Z-skewering new album, ‘Lemonade’, Beyonce was showing her man what he had to lose with this peach-hued, puffy sleeved latex Givenchy gown. This year this annual fashion gala, Manus x Machina, took place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York under the warm Spring sunshine.
When asked how difficult it was to slip into the latex gown, Beyonce thought back to the near-invisible Givenchy dress she wore to the last gala and responded by saying:
“A lot easier than last year.”
Fashion lovers amassed in droves to see the ribbon of starlets walking by in all the finery of their favourite stylists and designers. It was a paparazzi extravaganza with all lens pointed at a vibrant celebration of ‘fashion in an age of technology’ and an array of glitz and futuristic high fashion. Everyone, even Anna Wintour, Vogue’s typically strict editor-in-chief, got involved with the playful, futuristic vibe.
This year the Oscars red carpet was alive with a bouquet of stylish pastel colours and subtle new twists on old designs. There were a few gorgeous starlets giving nods to classic Hollywood, our favourite of which was Margot Robbie in this glittering Tom Ford leather appliqué dress. Quite fittingly she cut a golden statuette in this elegant long-sleeved frock, reminiscent of those Bob Mackie dresses that were all the rage in the ’80s. The plunging neckline creates a flattering line to complement Margot’s enviable figure and the chic tasselled minaudiére provides a lovely final touch.
Doesn’t it get boring when everyone goes for a similar style and plays it safe? Enter ‘Modern Family’ star Sofia Vergara, raising the temperature with this knock-out pink Vera Wang dress. It’s always going to be a challenge to find a dress that’ll do justice to a figure like that. However, this full-length number kept Sofia looking classy while at the same time featuring a sweetheart neckline to accentuate her ample bust. It’s safe to say she owned the Red Carpet at the 22nd Screen Actors Guild Awards early this year. She also wore Charlotte Olympia shoes and carried a matching pink Jimmy Choo clutch.
Katy Perry hit the 51st Academy of Country Music Awards with her usual fun, punk-rock edge. No stranger to flourishes of eye-catching colour she rocked this metallic blue suit, complete with pink cowboy boots, and lit up the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Having recently returned from her Disneyland date with new boyfriend, Orlando Bloom, Katy was looking especially at ease and alluring, her smokey eyes, half-closed and a vaguely disinterested smile parting her bright lips. We love how she unleashed her inner cowgirl and took the event in her carefree stride, even going so far as to duet with Dolly Parton, performing both high-energy hits ‘Jolene’ and ‘9 to 5’ to a sea of adoring fans.
